Fangs of Fortune – A Mythic Tale of Love, Redemption, and Immortal Bonds

Fangs of Fortune isn't just a fantasy—it’s an aching, poetic epic with emotional storytelling, phenomenal character arcs, and a world built with such care it feels like myth.

Zhu Yan / Zhao Yuanzhou (Hou Minghao): The Cursed Demon He’s over 30,000 years old—a white ape demon turned protector of humanity. In human form as Zhao Yuanzhou, he’s aloof, witty, and seemingly untouchable, but inside? He’s grieving, burdened, and endlessly loyal. His greatest weapon is the oil paper umbrella given by Li Lun during their time in the mortal world, which he used to protect his loved ones and fight against evil. During the red moon night, he loses his control, which leads to the death of many mortal beings, including the death of Zhuo Yichen's brother and father, along with the death of Zhao Wan'er ( master of Wen Xiao), who gave him the name of her brother, Zhao Yan Zhou. They were considered brother and sister in the wilderness and were the personal protector/ guardian of Wen Xiao when she was in the wilderness with his face covered with a mask to prevent himself from showing his true demonic form in front of Wen Xiao. Deeply tormented by guilt, he surrenders himself and becomes a member of the Demon Hunting Bureau to find the Baize Token and makes a promise with Zhuo Yichen during their first meeting that he has to kill him with cloud lightning sword when the right time occurs and before that he will teach and guide him to use it. His ancestral Ying Long was the best friend of Bingyi, the ancestor of Zhou Yichen, and was killed by the sword made from Ying Long's bones and horns to save the world, and the same fate lies for Zhu Yan, who ultimately dies in the hands Zhuo Yichen after getting stabbed with the sword in the end to protect and save the world and the mortal beings His internal torment is masked with smirks and arrogance, but his every action, especially for Wen Xiao and the Bureau, is soaked in sacrifice. His dynamic with Zhuo Yichen is especially beautiful: two men standing on opposite sides of justice, learning to trust across centuries of pain. Zhu Yan's love for Wen Xiao, his beloved, can be seen from the way he looks at her, cares for her, respects her, and falls for her from the time she was in the wilderness, and was even ready to sacrifice himself to protect her. In the end, he absorbs the poison from Wen Xiao's body, whose body was affected while playing the poisonous Baize token, which could ultimately lead to her death. So for her to survive, he took all the poison by himself so that she could live well and protect the world and people using her Baize Token The scene that will break the heart of viewers is when he turns into demon form to shield Wen Xiao, bleeding and trembling, whispering, "Even if the world calls me a beast, I would rather be cursed than lose her again."

Wen Xiao (Chen Duling): The Goddess Who Had to Learn to Fight At first glance, Wen Xiao is delicate, soft-spoken, cautious, and unsure. But she carries the soul of a Bai Ze Goddess and grows into her power with incredible grace. Her journey is all about self-discovery—learning to embrace both strength and vulnerability. She is the Baize Goddess with no powers and has only half of the Baize token until she realizes the other half of it is with her beloved Zhu Yan She’s not flashy, but she feels. And that’s what makes her real. Her chemistry with Zhu Yan is subtle, slow-burning, but so intense it hurts. The way she sees through his defences is powerful. When she and Zhu Yan have reached a level of understanding and they deeply love each will they be able to save Mount Kunlun and the Wilderness. The scene that will melt the heart of viewers is when Wen Xiao steps between a sword and Zhu Yan, saying, “You’ve bled for the world long enough. Let me be your shield now.”

Zhuo Yichen (Tian Jiarui): The Sword of Justice with a Wounded Heart His family was destroyed by Zhu Yan’s demon form, yet he agrees to work beside him—teach me to kill you later, he says. During their first meeting, he swears to Zhu Yan that he will kill him with his own hands if not let him be struck by heaven and lightning. As the story progresses and when he turns into a demon, he realises how one loses control and can even kill their loved ones in that moment, so the deep hatred turned into the most cherished, loved friendship and brotherhood, who was willing to not use his inner core to repair the cloud Lighting Sword. His ancestral Bingyi and Ying Long, a lookalike and great demon like Zhu Yan, were also friends for eternity, but to save the world, Bingyi had to kill the Great Demon Ying Long( who was a good demon and wanted to sacrifice himself so that he can become a star and save the world. His horn was used to create the cloud lighting sword, which can be used to slay demons as well as protect the people. His stoicism hides an ocean of pain, but his morality is steel. The character arc where hate gives way to understanding, then to brotherhood… it was breathtaking. Their slow-burn rivalry-turned-bond is one of the emotional cores of the show. The scene that will pain the heart of viewers is when Zhuo stands between Zhu Yan and the celestial court, declaring, “He saved my soul when I only wanted revenge.”

Pei Sijing (Cheng Xiao): Warrior Woman with a Broken Past Pei Sijing is a quiet storm—deadly with a bow, and haunted by guilt. She killed her demon-possessed brother with her own hands… only for him to return in puppet form. Her arc is so raw: carrying pain, confronting her past, and slowly learning that she’s still worthy of love and redemption. She barely speaks, but every time she draws her bow, it feels like a heart string snapping. The scene that will amaze the heart of viewers is when she kneels before her brother’s soul, sobbing silently, while Zhu Yan offers her a second chance through forbidden magic.

Li Lun(Yan An) – The Demon of Love and Betrayal Li Lun is not a villain in the traditional sense—he’s a wound that never healed. Born from the spirit of a locust tree, once cherished like a brother by Zhu Yan, Li Lun is a creature forged not from evil, but from heartbreak. His descent into darkness is agonizingly human—born of betrayal, loneliness, and the unbearable sting of being cast aside by the only person who ever saw him as more than a demon. He manipulates, provokes, and destroys not out of power lust, but because love curdled into obsession. His greatest defense weapon is the pellet drum, which Zhu Yan gifted him during their travel to the mortal world, which can cure tears. He uses this same drum to manipulate and possess his victims and trap them in their obsessions/ dreams. When he reincarnated himself in the end, he realized his mistake and supported Zhu Yan and Zhou Yinchen to end the phoenix by dividing his demonic powers in half and giving each of them to Zhu Yan and Zhou Yinchen. Through his original form of a pagoda tree, he attracts the fire towards himself so that his friend and Zhuo could achieve in destroying Zong Yu (phoenix) forever. His sacrifice did not go fruitless in the end. The scene that will make the heart of the viewers sob like anything is when he breaks down in front of Zhu Yan, screaming not in rage, but grief, you realize: he never stopped wanting to be saved.“You called me brother... and then let the world forget me.”

Bai Jiu (Lester Lin)– The Gentle Flame in a World of Storms Bai Jiu is the quiet heart of the Bureau—just 13, a medical genius, and possibly the purest soul in the entire drama. His gentleness is not weakness—it’s his strength. Surrounded by immortals, warriors, and demons, Bai Jiu holds his own not with weapons, but with compassion, brilliance, and quiet bravery. He starts shy, uncertain, but step by step, he becomes the emotional anchor of the team. His healing hands save lives, but his soft encouragement and unwavering loyalty are what truly heal hearts. His bond with Ying Lei is a deeply tender highlight—a relationship full of protective warmth and unspoken affection. He is a real spy from the Chongwu camp who joined the Demon Hunting Bureau in order to seal all five senses of Zhu Yan to obtain his inner core in order to protect his mother, who is a Divine Goddess. When he finally comes into his senses and realizes the truth, he breaks off his bond with the chongwu, camp by cutting the chongwu camp tattoo, and in the end, he absorbs/destroys the ever-burning wood ashes to prevent the rebirth of phoneix and to save his hero Mr Zhuo “I can’t fight like you… But I’ll stay, and I’ll heal whatever I can.”

Ying Lei(Xu Zhen Xuan) – The Laughing Warrior Who Gave Everything Ying Lei enters the story with a smile, a feast, and a playful glint in his eyes. He is a 200-year-old mountain god in tiger spirit form, a young, youthful, highly spirited half god half half-demon who leaves Mount Kunlun to explore the modern world and pursue his interest in cooking. His Shanghai Port is extremely useful and can be used to transport anywhere and everywhere. He cooks for the team, jokes with the warriors, and gently teases Bai Jiu like a loving elder brother. But beneath his laid-back charm lies titanic devotion. He doesn’t fight for glory. He fights to protect. His love for Bai Jiu is never spoken outright—but it’s in every glance, every meal, every time he stands in front of danger without hesitation. His final act—sacrificing his life to shield Bai Jiu—speaks louder than any confession ever could. Ying Lei may have died, but he left behind a legacy of courage, loyalty, and a broken little healer who will carry his memory forever.“If you ever miss me… just eat well, and stay warm. That’s enough.”

Pei Siheng( Lai Wei Ming) – The Sword Raised on Guilt Pei Siheng is Pei Sijing’s brother and a tragic reflection of war-born honor. Where Sijing is restrained, Siheng is driven—sometimes too much. He carries the burden of their family’s fall with a kind of stoic rage, constantly pushing himself to live up to the warrior ideal. What makes Siheng compelling is his fractured sense of right and wrong. He believes in justice, but his pride often clouds compassion. Still, his bond with Sijing is beautiful: protective, stubborn, and deeply scarred. Even after he became a puppet, his soul wished to protect his sister as Zhu Yan granted his wish using his magic so that Siheng could stand by, protect, and fight against those who wished to harm his sister. He was a person who was not in good health since young, and after his death, through his last bit of soul, his wish of protecting his sister forever and ever was granted till the end.“I became strong so she wouldn’t have to. But I forgot—she was already stronger than me.”

Ran Yi( Riley Wang) – The Dream-Weaving Water Ghost/Demon Ran Yi is a mysterious water demon, and he induced the sweetest and most wanted dream for those brides whom he killed to prevent his bride from getting married off to someone else. In this way, he protected his bride, but at the cost of other brides. He is an ancient fish god who lingers around the shadows of Sinan Water Town, using his dreams to communicate and protect, especially after Lady Qi( his bride, the one whom he cherished the most and loved forever until his death)rescued him from hunters. Ran Yi's role is subtle yet essential: he subtly supports the Demon-Hunting team by guiding them through intangible paths, wrapping his influence in empathy and gentle guidance.

Fei(Zuo Ye) – The Plague Demon with a Lonely Soul Fei is a calamity demon—everywhere he goes, plague follows. He was born cursed as a plague demon and feels lonely, desperate, secluded in the Wilderness, and yearns for traveling in the mortal world, for friendship, human interaction, and to live like other mortal beings, yet is cursed to bring havoc and death. He befriends Qing Geng(plague-immune goddess/bird), only to accidentally unleash a plague that devastates Sinan. Grieving from guilt, he allows the Baize Goddess to seal himself and Qing Geng forever in Lingxi villa. Fei is deeply saddened and heartbroken to see his friend being trapped with him forever, and fears the destruction of the mortal beings, so he destroys his inner core to end the plague. His final words to the Demon hunting bureau team were "Don't kill her, please. If you do so, then I will have no more friends in the world anymore." His loneliness and sorrow echo through the story’s emotional core, making him tragically sympathetic.

Qing Geng( Ai Mi) – The Plague-Bound Guardian Bird Qing Geng is a divine guardian spirit—a bird demon immune to Fei's plague, and she is the first and forever friend of Fei, whom she befriends. Once a goddess in the mortal world who was worshipped like anything after the plague, which hit and destroyed the lives of mortal beings, she and her lingxi villa were no longer seen as place of worship but instead it was hated by everybody because she as a goddess who was not able to saves the lives of her worshipers because of her eternal friendship/ bond she made with Fei so she allowed her to be sealed in the Lingxi villa forever with fei to rotect and prevent further lose of mortal beings. During her tenure of being sealed in the villa, she gets manipulated by Li Lun through his dark energy rhinoceros horn incense to sow discord between her and Fei. Her arc is one of betrayal and rescue: after being freed and deeply guilt-ridden, she must reconcile her duty, her love for Fei, and her self-worth. Her emotional struggle adds crucial balance to Fei’s arc. Towards the end, she uses her inner core, which has the power to cure Zhou Yichen from the Poison of Indulgence created by Zhong Yu. Her final words were " I can finally be with him"( refers to Fei).

Cheng Huang(Ryan Cheng) –The Origin of the Sundial: A God Who Froze Time for Love Cheng Huang is the original owner of the sundial, which is a spiritual artifact of obsession created by himself. After losing the Original Bai Ze Goddess to the plague, his grief was so overwhelming that he forged the sundial as a time-sealing device, a desperate attempt to preserve love and stop fate. He couldn’t accept loss. The woman he cherished most—gentle, divine, and self-sacrificing—died because she gave away her divine power to save mortals. His desire to preserve what he loved led to the creation of a structure that would halt time, memory, and will. It traps people in their obsessions, turning their strongest desires into deadly illusions. He uses Pei Siheng's love/obsession to protect his sister forever as a weapon, turns him into a puppet, and uses him to commit brutal murders with deer-antler symbols. When he transforms Pei Siheng into a puppet using the sundial’s power, it’s a horrifying parallel—he tries to give someone else the “gift” he wishes he could have had: frozen, eternal connection. He is a god consumed by memory, no longer divine in clarity but human in grief. The sundial is his shrine, prison, and sin—proof that even gods are not immune to the ache of loss. After her death of the Original Baize Goddess (ironically from a plague), he absorbs her Token—his longing now tainted by guilt and horror. His emotional fracture drives him deeper into moral darkness, and his line “I regret that I didn’t do enough to save her” tells us about his overwhelming regret and grief in not saving Baize Goddess.

Overall, "Fangs of Fortune" is a must-watch drama that was an emotional roller coaster, full of rich characters, unexpected twists, and moments that truly stay with you. It’s the kind of drama that leaves a mark long after every episode, which will be experienced for a long time by the viewers.
